What is #ProjectScouted all about?

There is no dearth of talent in Durban and many undiscovered gems yearn for an opportunity to display their talent. Owner of Lee Folkard Photography, Lee Folkard, had this thought in mind when creating his annual Project. There has been immense growth since the first Project, “Project i”, in 2010 to the second cycle of #ProjectScouted being held this year. Improving and expanding on the concept that proved to be a winning one in 2014, #ProjectScouted Cycle 2 now has a following of proportions uncommon in Durban.

The Project’s main players are of course the girls who are chosen to participate, but the behind-the-scenes key figures are the scouts themselves – as the name of the Project suggests. These scouts, chosen from all around Durban, discover girls who show unique photographic allure in front of the camera. Their main port of call to finding these girls is social media – Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram – where girls can get the attention of the scouts by hashtagging their most striking images with #ProjectScouted.

If a scout thinks a girl has what it takes to be a part of the biggest photography challenge in Durban, they choose them as a part of their team. Girls also have the opportunity to be spotted by scouts anywhere in Durban as our scouts take their role very seriously and are always on the lookout for that distinctive girl. There will also be an open casting giving girls another chance to be selected to participate.

#ProjectScouted is a celebration of the female aesthetic. This is a platform for beauty to be showcased through captivating and intriguing images shot by the best photographers in Durban whilst illustrating that there is not only one type of beauty. The Project is focused on the enrichment of young women by providing them with the opportunity of an unmatched experience while gaining exposure and meeting unique people. #ProjectScouted is also a display for exceptional local photographers, designers, hair stylists, makeup artists and other creatives. The final product of the Project is much more than beautiful images; it is an experience.

All photoshoots and events are open to the public free of charge, so take note of the following important dates:
o   13 February 2015* - The deadline for scouting and participants’ forms to be submitted

Your #ProjectScouted FAQs answered

After the resounding success of #ProjectScouted Cycle 1 last year with its inundation of social media and its takeover of the Durban social scene, Cycle 2, currently underway, promises no less. With all the interest being shown in the Project, by aspiring participants and the keen public, Lee Folkard Photography put together a list of your most frequently asked questions to give you the heads-up on everything #ProjectScouted Cycle 2.

1.    What exactly is #ProjectScouted?
#ProjectScouted was created by the owner of Lee Folkard Photography, Lee Folkard, who has held yearly photography projects in Durban with the first one titled “Project i” in 2010. These projects, consisting of several phases where the girls will be judged on the quality of their images, centre on providing young women a platform to explore their photographic potential, gain exposure, and have a once-in-a-lifetime experience of working with some of the most talented photographers and designers in Durban. Following the enormous hype of #ProjectScouted last year, Lee held on to the name. This year girls will once again be given the opportunity to be scouted by scouts anywhere in Durban, but especially on social media using the hashtag #ProjectScouted.

2.    How can I enter the Project?
Girls can enter #ProjectScouted by uploading their best pictures onto Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter and adding the hashtag #ProjectScouted so that scouts can track the entries. If a scout thinks you have potential, they will contact you on the respective social network. You could even be spotted by a scout anywhere in Durban! Thereafter you are required to fill in a form that secures your participation in the Project.

3.    Is there an age limit for entrants?
16 and over only. If you are under 18, we do require parental or guardian consent and we recommend that you have a parent or guardian present at all the photoshoots and events should you be selected to participate.

4.    Can I enter if I have tattoos or piercings?
Of course! The #ProjectScouted team is looking for unique, interesting, and distinct girls. If you have something that separates you from the crowd for whatever reason, you could just be what we’re looking for. Interesting people are what makes interesting images.

5.    Can boys enter?
Nope, #ProjectScouted is open only to girls. Sorry, guys.

6.    What is the closing date for social media scouting?
You have until 13 February 2015 to get your forms back to the relevant person/s.

7.    Do I have another chance to enter if I am not selected by a scout or I miss the deadline?
Yes, you do. If you have not been scouted by the 13th of February, you can attend our open #ProjectScouted casting on Saturday the 21st of February 2015. Here you will be screened by a panel of judges. If a scout likes you, they will choose you for their team. Please note, however, that attending the open casting does not guarantee your participation in the Project.

8.    What is the role of the scouts in #ProjectScouted?
As the name of the Project reveals, the scouts are one of the most, if not the most, important people involved in the Project. Their role is to find the girls with winning potential by scouting them on social media (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter) or even by spotting them around Durban. The scouts will be available to answer any questions that the participants have. The scouts are the team leaders and they will keep up the morale of the girls and go out of their way to ensure that their #ProjectScouted experience is a highlight in their lives.

9.    Are there any costs involved?
One of the major distinctions of the Project is that there are absolutely no costs involved for the girls in either entering or participating. At no point before or during the Project will the participants be asked for money. Clothing, hair and makeup will be provided by our sponsors for most phases of the Project.

10. Can past entrants and participants enter again this year?
Absolutely! If you have entered or participated in any of the previous Projects, you are still welcome to enter #ProjectScouted. But remember, this does not mean that you will have an advantage over the other girls. All judging will be strictly based on the images captured in Cycle 2.

11. When will the shoots and events take place? Will I have to miss school/university/work?
The Project will be tailored to the girls participating and events and shoots will take place during weekends and holidays to accommodate those in school, university or are working.

12. How long will the Project run this year?
The Project will run for approximately three months starting with Phase One on 28 February 2015.

13. What criteria are the participants judged on?
#ProjectScouted is a photographic platform and the girls will only be judged on elements related to fashion and beauty photography. Basically, the participants’ end images are what determine whether they stay in the Project.

14. Are the photoshoots and events open to the public
Yes! Anyone is welcome to come to the shoots or events free of charge. We want to meet the people who have been following the Project and have helped it grow to such an extent.

15. Why does the #ProjectScouted team use an emoticon of a goat in their social media postings?
The goat became the unofficial mascot of #ProjectScouted last year after Lee thought that it would be quite cool to own a pet goat and started using the emoticon in all #ProjectScouted related posts. As fate would have it, this year is the Chinese year of the goat and so this year the goat has achieved official status as the #ProjectScouted mascot.
